Nice acoustic session with an early Pointing the Finger with extra lyrics. But the sound is not too good.

• BOOTLEG CDR: MIDLAND THEATRE GROUP, NOTTIGHAM, JAN 21 1980 "PINKY" Image

a.k.a. POETRY READING MIDDLAND HOTEL DARBY
Artwork by Kevin Coyne, layout by me.

Kevin Coyne reads poetry and sings 2 songs, with Bob Ward (special effects on electric guitar).

December Chant 18:22  [unreleased poem]

The Inevitable 3:18  [unreleased poem]
City Black 5:11  [unreleased poem]

The Idiot 3:25  [unreleased poem]

Happy Tunes 9:58 [unreleased poem]

Memory Lane 12:01 [unreleased]

1:08:47

Incredible! It sounds like Case History #2 plus disc 2 of Sanity Stomp. Great guitar by Bob Ward too.
The first version had a bad sound, then a much better sounding version surfaced in April 2007, called POETRY READING MIDDLAND HOTEL DARBY(a bit shorter: 53:07mn long, incomplete last song), thanks to Dave and Uwe for this.

• BOOTLEG CDR: BATTERSEA TOWN HALL "GRAND GALA" a.k.a. CHASING RAINBOWS Image

I love this one, a very rare solo performance. Best Fat Girl ever.

1980 is a bad year: Kevin Coyne goes though a nervous breakdown (see his liner notes on POINTING THE FINGER); the next album (with his frightening artwork) follows the mood:

CD release: Virgin CDV 2152, released in 1991

Fascinating. Again, new musicians who come from a jazz/jazz rock background and take the music in another new direction. A personal favorite.

In 2004, Brian Godding told (on his website) about the recording of 'Bubbles'. Extract:

"Kevin said heÕd like to continue the musical relationship at the end of the run of gigs and invited me to contribute to his next Album for Virgin records so of coarse I was well down for that. At this point I had no idea what he had in mind but I knew it would be something totally different to to what IÕd done before and, it most certainly was! IÕd long given up the desire to writeÕsongsÕ so I assumed that IÕd turn up, plug in and learn a few songs heÕd written but that was not the plan at all! Kevin (well actually Bob [Ward]) booked some studio time and on arriving and setting up Kevin looked at me and said,Ó got any tunes or cord sequencesÓ?-------(!!!!!!) I beg your pardon( I thought!), well, for some reason( probably sheer terror!) I started fiddling around with this little sequence of riffs and cords and KevÕ said, ÒI like that, play it againÓ. So, I play it again, Kevin riffles through a pile of poems and lyrics and starts singing this amazing song over the top of it!! Bloody hell!( me thinks) this is going to be good when we sort it out! ÒGot that on tape BobÓ? Kevin says as we grind to a halt after some time, Bob gives a nod from the control room and we appear to have Ô Learn to swim, learn to drownÕ,the first track for the new album , Bursting Bubbles!!! I said to Kevin that maybe we should do another take at least but he just said ÒwhyÓ? He was of coarse right as this was the way he worked and we made the rest of the album in the same way( he did let me do a few overdubs though, just to keep me happy!) A very spontaneous performer and artist with the ability to pull it off and, of great importance, a very selfless and generous gent!!"

Bob Ward Demos:

Talk About Love [unreleased] 4:29

Throw It All Away (KC/BW) [unreleased] 3:24

Talk Is Cheap (KC/BW) [unreleased] 3:02

Talk Is Cheap (KC/BW) [alternate - unreleased] 2:32

Excelent and rare studio stuff; (also included in DYNAMITE DAYS OUTAKES) provided by Tony (thank you!) via a journalist who interviewed Ward many years ago. Bob Ward later used some of these songs with Austrian artist Sigi Maron almost with the same backing tracks (see Covers). Sound is OK.

Not sure of the exact dates of these demos but they were often played live with Ward in early 1980.

CD release (1CD): Virgin CDV 3504, released in 1991.

Record #1 is pure power pop and works quite well; record #2 is very innovative avant-garde with Robert Wyatt.
In 1988, Brian Godding released a great instrumental jazz-rock LP called "Slaughter on Shaftesbury Avenue", recorded for the most part with GLS and where he played some of the themes from Sanity Stomp #2.

Says Kevin about 'Sanity': " I was quite ill when I made that record, as a matter of fact; I was quite mad, basically. ThatÕs why itÕs called Sanity Stomp. I had a nervous breakdown and, ironically, I donÕt want to say ironically...amazingly...I was able to carry on making records. ThatÕs a record I made when I was clinically ninety-five per cent nuts, and the themes are rather odd, but somehow it comes out as sounding all right. IÕm amazed."

A good show. Only LP boot I've heard of (on Chameleon Records Croo 19, 300 copies, VERY rare!).

In 2006, Harald, the guy who actually recorded the show, wrote this:
"The correct date is 3rd September 1981, it was a concert with 4 acts at the "Funkausstellung" in the ICC Berlin. The correct setlist is Eastbourne ladies, Old fashioned love song, Turpentine, I don't know what to do, Dark dance hall/Day to day, America, Stand up, A loving hand, and an encore that has not been broadcasted on the radio; I don't remember anymore what is was, only that Steve Lamb did not came back on stage - only Dave Sheen and John Etheridge accompanied Kevin on that last one. It has been a very strange audience, Bad Manners was the main act, and unfortunately their fans made much trouble that you can hear of throughout the set ("Iâm not a popstar, so forget about it" etc. - but I don't know whether the bootleg really documents all these things?). Kevin even let is pants down and showed his ass to the audience (you may identify this scene by the reaction in the audience during John's solo in I don't know what to do). Really a bad context for a brilliant band. The interplay of the band has been extremely fascinating and full of energy - nothing that compares with Rough live (I also like Pete Kirtley, especially his Bush Telegraph with Steve Lamb on bass, but John Etheridge - even if he has spoken not very good about this time - is simply somewhat better)...
The Death of Ludwig van Beethoven was just a mini-sketch, not really a song. Just Kevin smoking on the stage (what was not allowed, of course), choking. Most probably a spontaneous idea. He had many of them those days"
Harald also provided a cdr transfer of the show, feat. 2 extra songs from a Dec 1983 show at the Quasimodo in Berlin.

Sometimes found as a three show CDR: Radio Concert, Berlin, Germany, 1981 + Zundfunk, 1994 + Mountain Charleston, 1999.

• PRODUCTION: Kevin Coyne produces Ben Watt's (from Everything But The Girl) solo 7" with 3 songs: Can't, Aubade, Tower Of Silence (Cherry Red, CHERRY 25). Says Watt about this recording session: "I made the mistake of booking studio time on FA Cup final day. he [Kevin] wasn't best pleased." He also says: "I remember talking Cherry Red into putting Kevin's orig [of the song So Strange] out as a single back in 81-82"

Also produced by Coyne, the 12" single a-side "Polar Exposure" and the song "The Trial", b-side of the "Another Reason" single by the band Five Or Six, also on Cherry Red, (CHERRY 19), 1981.

And, finally, Kevin Coyne produced Why are you Dead by the Group Red Rinse. (their singer Jim Woodland sang backing vocals on POLITICZ)
