THE 70's

Ian Breakwell did "performances with Kevin Coyne, 1971, [at] Alexandra Palace of 'The Institution'". They also played the same piece in 1973, I.C.A London and Exe Gallery, Exeter (information found by Tony in "Continuous Diary 1965-1975" a book by Ian Breakwell). A 1975 film called "Other Than Art's Sake" directed by Peter Kennedy, Sydney, Australia included a shooting of the 1973 performance at I.C.A! (Kevin Coyne had published stories along with Breakwell). First released on CD (See For Miles SEECD 410) in 1994 as "CASE HISTORY...PLUS", the "plus" meaning I'm All Aching from Siren's STRANGE LOCOMOTION and A Leopard Never Changes Its Spots, a 1979 song from the PEEL SESSIONS, none of them having anything to do with Case History but well...

Second CD reissue in Sep 2007 by Cherry Red, as part of THE DANDELION YEARS 1969-1972 box set .

Tapestry Records (Liechtenstein) re-released Case History in 2007 as a 180 gram vinyl LP, limited edition of 1000 copie (TPT 229LP).

In 2008, Airmail Recordings (Japan) rereleased Siren (Airac 1460), Strange Locomotion (Airac 1462) and Case History (Airac 1470), along with 13 other Dandelion artists cds, all presented in facsimile paper sleeves. Released as one CD, Virgin CDVM 2501, in 1990 including the single Lovesick Fool and Sea Of Love (with its 78:42, it ranks as #66 on the list of the longest CDs in the world... but to cram all that music int one CD, Virgin took the liberty of cutting the last verse of Eastbourne Ladies [thanks Rob Olver for that info).

His most celebrated album. Absolutely essential. Pure genius in song writing and singing.
A postersize add for Marjory; another one. And a poster

First Kevin Coyne band: (thanks Tim Penn)
In ZIG-ZAG mag #36, Kevin says he began recording Marjory at The Manor with Dave Clague on acoustic guitar and they did eleven tracks. Then, Simon Draper got the backing musicians together.
- Most of all later stayed to form the first Kevin Coyne band in Januray 1974: Gordon Smith (guitar), Tony Cousins (bass), Chili Charles (drums). That band probably only played radio shows in early 74.
- Recording of BLAME IT ON THE NIGHT in Feb 1974: Gordon Smith (guitar), Tony Cousins (bass), Chilli Charles (drums) except Terry Slade (drums on Poor Swine and the song Blame it on the Night), Ruan O'Loghlainn (sax), Fi Trench (piano)
- Some shows in March 1974 feat. Eddie Sparrow on drums. Says Tim: "Chili Charles was primarily a session drummer and did not want to be part of the road band (I'm sure he would have been too expensive as well :-)". Terry Slade becomes the permanent drummer. Also, Rick Dodd joins on sax
- Tim Penn joins the band on piano on May/June 74. He leaves sometime during September 74, probably around the end of the month. Replaced by Pete Nu until about early December 74 and then is asked to re-join.
- About 2 weeks after that (early 75?), Virgin sacks Rick Dodd, Terry Slade and Tony Cousins and Archie Legget (bass) is brought in and then Andy Summers (guitar).
- The new band does a tour of Spain in January 75 with the drummer from Gong, maybe with Summers. Then Andy Summers brings in Pete Wolff on drums.
- Late 1975 Gordon Smith leaves the band, Steve Thompson (ex John Mayall) replaces Leggett on bass and Zoot Money replaces Tim Penn on keyboards. The March 16, 1975 Rainbow show is the last one with Penn and Smith. The "In Living Black and White" band (Summers, Money, Wolf, Thompson) is on.

** Gordon Smith had released a solo album called Long Overdue and a single in 1969 on Blue Horizon (respectively 7-63211 and 57-3156) with some musicians from the original Fleetwood Mac (see STORY OF BLUE HORIZON).
Read here a great Gordon Smith interview by Clive Product. Gordon talks about how he met Kevin and the recording of their three albums together (this is an edited version of the interview that will be included in the new, updated and expanded edition of "Beautiful Extremes: Conversations with Kevin Coyne" by Clive Product, due for publication in 2008)

• The US MARJORY RAZORBLADE LP (Virgin VR 13-106) was absurdly truncated to a single LP (as somebody said on the web: "Imagine you learn Sgt Pepper's had been amputated of his half...") Back cover photo from US edition of Marjory Razorblade

Never released as a CD although Virgin announced in 1991 a CDV 2012...

Very good and underrated. This is a hard one to find. John Falstaff has only ever seen two copies of it; so did I and I waited 25 years to get my own copy!...

*The LPs with the lyrics insert are even rarer!

Here, a Blame It ad ("Just the album for you mother if she's a loud dirty boozy girl"...!) and there, another one... and a third one.
*Poor Swine was the first song recorded for the album, when the early band (Smith, Dodd, Slade, Cousins) was working on the basic tracks. Also recorded at the same time was Let's Have a Party - later issued as a single and a LP - a fake live recording. Unreleased tracks from the same session include Another Man Goe Down and a coupe of others (Thanks Tim Penn for the info).

• BOOTLEG CDR: LIVE ON DUTCH RADIO 1974 + 1998 IMAGE
Kevin Coyne with Gordon Smith (guitar), Tony Cousins (bass), Terry Slade (drums), Pete Nu (keyboards), Rick Dodds (sax)
Broadcasted on Dutch Radio as promotion for the Pinkpop concert in 1975.
Place and exact date of recording is unknown but it has to be late 1974 because Pete Nu is playing in the band instead of Tim Penn.

Chicken Wing 3:17
Boogie Children (J-L Hooker) 3:20
Let's Work Together [Canned Heat] 2:30 [unreleased]

Excelent. This show also includes a Dutch radio show from 1998

Late 1974/early 1975, band broken up, only Smith and Penn retained.  Andy Summers (guitar, ex-New Animals who would later join Police), Archie Leggett (bass) join. Tour of Spain in January 75 with the drummer from Gong then Peter Wolff (drums) joins the fold.

• BOOTLEG: FRANKFURT, GERMANY

Also including 3 tracks from Berlin, Oct (or Sep?) 3 1981

• VARIOUS ARTISTS LP: OVER THE RAINBOW (THE LAST CONCERT, LIVE!) IMAGE

FILM: - MUSIKFILMEN (1976) directed by Tommy Goldman, Dick Idestam-Almqvist, Stefan Jarl, Jan Lindkvist, Axel Lohman, Lennart Malmer.
The film documents the alternative festival, made to protest against the Eurovision Song Contest held in Stockholm 1975. There are many Swedish and international artists on stage, as well as some clips from speeches, riots, civil wars, and the people at the song contest itself. (Summary written by Per Johansson; thanks!). Kevin sings "Let's Work Together" with Gordon Smith, Andy Summers (guitars), Tim Penn (piano), Archie Legget (bass), Peter Wolff (drums). Excelent stuff

Late 1975 Gordon Smith left the band, Steve Thompson (ex John Mayall) replaced Leggett on bass and Zoot Money replaced Tim Penn on keyboards. The "In Living Black and White" band was ready. Zoot Money, a legendary Sixties session player (when Chas Chandler arrived in London with Jimi Hendrix in 1966, he first took Hendrix to Zoot's to jam) had played with Eric Burdon's New Animals among others bands. His beautiful Fender Rhodes electric piano sound, his sense of comedy and improvisation will be a lot influencial in Kevin Coyne's music fro the next years; they will also play many shows in duo.

THE RAVER was a regular column that appeared in Melody Maker; here's one, rather good: 8-16-75: Ê"One way to cool off in a heatwave - get thrown in a swimming pool. ÊIt happened to MM's Karl "Streaker" Dallas at the Manor Recording Studios' little soiree on Saturday night. ÊIt was a relaunch for the legendary Oxfordshire rock haven, and among the jammers were Ollie Halsall, Kevin Coyne, Rob Tait and the incredible Gordon Smith, electric slide guitarist, who actually stood up to play (he usually sits down), and who should be signed to a band forthwith. ÊAndy Summers was seen looking for a guitar to play in the jamming tent, while Karl Dallas beat a tambourine, which was probably why he got pushed into the pool. ÊThere was quite a crew of celebrities joining in the festivities ö Robert Wyatt in straw hat and clutching a flask of tea, Ivor Cutler, Henry Cow, Anthony "Wild Man" Moore, John Cale, Chris Spedding, Lady June, Mike Oldfield, and Roy Harper. ÊOllie Halsall was enthusing about his new band Boxer, which features Mike Patto and Tony Newman."

• SINGLE: Lorna (2:45) / Let's Have A Party (2:29) (J-M Robinson) [live] Image

VS 126, Nov 7 1975. (also released as a promo 12 inch single for DJ's).

(both songs are on the LET'S HAVE A PARTY LP). Let's Have a Party - a fake live recording - is an outake from the BLAME IT ON THE NIGHT basic tracks session

VS 16541AT, Germany 1975

(both songs are on the LET'S HAVE A PARTY LP)

Let's Have a Party sounds like a live recording but is really an outake from the BLAME IT ON THE NIGHT sessions, most likely played by Gordon Smith, Tony Cousins, Rick Dodd on saxophone, Terry Slade on drums and an unidentified piano. Lorna is probably Summers, Money, Thompson, Wolf.

• FILM: Don't Make Waves, a UK television play by Snoo Wilson with Kevin Coyne, 1975? (anyone knows the right date?). Some of the songs (short extracts, total time: 9:16) of the play appear as a filler on the bootleg CDR: BABBLE, LIVE, ROCK CLUB:

Don't Make Waves

Three unknown songs

Good Boy

One unknown song                          All those songs with (I think) Zoot Money

Talking to no-one

Don't Make Waves

Strange Locomotion (KC/DC/NC)     Those are with a band featuring Andy Summers, apparently recorded the Over the Rainbow night.

Read the script of the play. Two articles about Trevor Griffiths and Don't Make Waves.

• FILM: PINK POP FESTIVAL

Silent footage only... exists on boot video (more). In 2004, out of the blue Universal Benelux released a DVD (the first commercial DVD featuring Coyne): "Pinkpop vol. 2 The Vintage Years 1975-1979" with 2 tracks by Kevin: Lonely lovers and It's not me. THIS DVD IS A TOTAL RIPP OFF!! Don't buy it! Lonely Lovers is the track from the LP and shows nothing but footage of the festival audience. It's not me is, again, from the LP and shows the Kevin Coyne band, totally out of sync. All of this, they forgot to mention on the DVD artwork... For shame... when will sharks from all over the world stop feeding on Kevin?( who by the way did NOT
